Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gaard Storr is facing an unusual situation after US President Donald Trump linked his plan to acquire Greenland to his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Storr said he wrote to Trump to make it clear that the Nobel Prize is not a matter for the Norwegian government, but rather is awarded by an independent committee.

Storr said in a statement, "I have made it clear to President Trump, as everyone knows, that the Nobel Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not by the Norwegian government." He also noted that he had received a message from Trump. He later made it public.

What Trump said:

Trump had mentioned in a message to the Norwegian Prime Minister that he was trying to acquire Greenland because he had not won the Nobel Peace Prize. He wrote, "Your country has not given me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping eight wars. So I no longer feel obligated to focus entirely on peace. But I can think of what is right for the United States.’

He also questioned Denmark’s claim to Greenland, saying, ‘There is no written record; a ship went there centuries ago, but our ship went there too.’

Trump wrote, ‘What I have done for NATO is the highest; now NATO should do something for the United States. The world cannot be safe unless we have full control of Greenland.’

White House response:

The White House explained Trump’s position as a national security perspective. Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said, ‘Greenland is a strategically important area and the United States’ defense will be effective in protecting its people from modern Arctic threats.’

According to the conversation, Trump’s message was in response to an earlier message sent by Stora Ennis and Finnish President Alexander Stubbs, in which they sought to de-escalate tensions and speak directly.
