The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has formally lodged a complaint with FIFA over what it described as controversial refereeing in its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 defeat to Argentina, while also calling for referee François Letexier and his officiating team to be removed from the remainder of the tournament.
Egypt crashed out of the World Cup after surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 in Atlanta, with the team's anger over several refereeing decisions continuing after the match.
In a formal complaint sent to FIFA, EFA president Hany Abo Rida requested an official investigation into several key decisions, arguing that repeated refereeing errors had a direct impact on the outcome of the match.
Hours earlier, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan had made similar claims during his post-match press conference, alleging that the result had been "predetermined" and that the French referee had come under pressure in Argentina's favour. However, he provided no evidence to support the allegation.
The EFA's complaint focuses on two incidents. The first was Mostafa Zico's goal in the 62nd minute, which was disallowed following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up.
The second involved Egypt's claim that Hamdi Fathi was fouled before Argentina scored the winning goal. The EFA argues that the incident was not properly reviewed by VAR.
FIFA has yet to issue an official response to Egypt's complaint.
Meanwhile, Argentina have turned their attention to the quarter-finals, where they will face Switzerland in Kansas City on Saturday after the Swiss defeated Colombia in a penalty shootout to reach the last eight.
