Argentina produced a remarkable late comeback to beat Egypt 3-2 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, scoring three goals in the final 13 minutes and 15 seconds.
Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute when defender Yasser Ibrahim headed home from Marwan Attia's corner. Argentina had a chance to equalise six minutes later, but Lionel Messi's penalty was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. It was Messi's fourth missed penalty in eight World Cup attempts and his second miss of the tournament.
Despite creating several chances, Argentina were repeatedly denied by Shobeir, who also made fine saves from Alexis Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez.
Egypt doubled their advantage in the 67th minute, leaving the three-time world champions on the brink of elimination.
Argentina began their comeback in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero headed in Messi's cross. Messi then levelled the score in the 84th minute with his eighth goal of the tournament, his powerful shot going in off the underside of the crossbar after beating the goalkeeper.
Deep into stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez delivered a cross that Enzo Fernández headed home in the 92nd minute to complete a stunning turnaround and send Argentina into the last eight.
