According to Brazilian outlet O Globo, citing South Korean media reports, the 57-year-old departed for Los Angeles just two days after returning home with the national team. His departure came shortly after he resigned as head coach following the country's disappointing World Cup campaign and the president's announcement of an investigation into the team's failure.
Although Hong attempted to avoid reporters at the airport, journalists managed to speak with him shortly before boarding. He dismissed speculation of internal conflict within the squad, saying, "There were no internal problems among the players." However, he declined to comment on reports that he had received death threats.
South Korea began their World Cup campaign with a victory over Czech Republic but suffered consecutive defeats against Mexico and South Africa, resulting in their elimination from the group stage. The disappointing performances sparked fierce criticism from fans, with Hong becoming the primary target of public frustration.
The backlash extended beyond social media. Local media published photographs showing signs displayed at several businesses stating that the former coach was not welcome on their premises.
The national team's return home was also met with protests at the airport, where supporters demanded Hong's resignation and voiced their anger over the team's performance.
Widely regarded as one of South Korea's greatest footballers, Hong Myung-bo enjoyed a successful coaching career at club level before taking charge of the national team. However, his World Cup campaign ended in disappointment, culminating in his resignation and reported departure from the country amid escalating security concerns.
