speculation over the end of his international career has continued to grow. But ahead of Argentina's Round of 32 clash against Cape Verde, De Paul insisted the focus should remain on enjoying Messi while he is still on the pitch.

"The most important thing for me is to enjoy Leo Messi every single day, just like every Argentine does," De Paul told reporters.

"We usually realise the value of something only after it's gone. That's how life is. But he is still with us, and we should simply enjoy every moment."

Messi has been in outstanding form at his sixth World Cup, leading the tournament scoring charts with six goals in three matches, including a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina's opening group-stage game.

Nicknamed "Messi's bodyguard" by supporters because of the way he protects his captain on the pitch, De Paul joined Messi at Inter Miami last year after leaving Atletico Madrid.

Speaking about their friendship, the midfielder said it was one of the greatest privileges of his life.

"Being a close friend of Lionel Messi means a lot to me. Friendship is one of the most valuable things in life. I feel very fortunate to have shared so many moments with him, both on and off the field. It makes me truly proud," he said.

De Paul also admitted Argentina had expected to face a more established football nation in the knockout stage after the draw.

"We thought we might face a former world champion or a team full of players from Europe's biggest leagues. Instead, we are playing a team that performed brilliantly in the group stage and fully deserved to qualify," he said.

The midfielder warned that Argentina cannot afford to underestimate Cape Verde.

"We have to be very responsible in tomorrow's match because it is extremely important for us," De Paul added.
