Kylian Mbappe once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the finest footballers of his generation, scoring a brace to inspire France to a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With France struggling to secure all three points, the Real Madrid forward stepped up when it mattered most, delivering two crucial goals to guide the former world champions to a winning start.

The match proved historic for Mbappe, who became France's all-time leading scorer after finding the net against Senegal.

French football has produced some of the game's greatest goalscorers, including Just Fontaine, Michel Platini, Jean-Pierre Papin, Thierry Henry and Olivier Giroud. However, Mbappe has now surpassed them all to claim the top spot on France's scoring charts.

At just 27 years of age, the Real Madrid star scored his 58th international goal to break Giroud's long-standing record and write his name into French football history.

Remarkably, Mbappe reached the milestone in only 99 appearances for France, underlining his extraordinary consistency and goalscoring ability at the highest level.

His two goals against Senegal also took his World Cup tally to 14, moving him closer to the tournament's all-time scoring record. Germany legend Miroslav Klose remains the leading scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals, leaving Mbappe just two strikes away from matching that mark.

With age still firmly on his side and another World Cup campaign underway, Mbappe appears well positioned to continue rewriting both French and international football records.
