Democrats are set to take control of Congress after a major setback for the Republican Party in the US midterm elections. With the opposition party set to take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in January 2027, a new political equation has emerged around President Donald Trump. Trump has warned that if any attempt is made to impeach or remove him from office, the Democratic Party will pay a huge political price.

The US President made the warning while speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday (November 4). This was his first time facing reporters at the White House since the midterm election results were announced.

According to a report by the French news agency AFP, Trump has dismissed fears that Democrats could launch impeachment proceedings against him. Asked by reporters whether he was concerned about this, he said, "No, no, no - not at all. I think if they did that, the Democratic Party would be destroyed."

Trump also said, "Impeachment without any reason, for what? For running a successful country? Our country is more successful now than at any time in history."

However, Trump also expressed his interest in working with Democrats in Congress. He said that he could have a good relationship with Democrats if they did not take any destructive steps. However, he also indicated that the situation could be different if the administration's work was obstructed. In this context, the US President reminded of his veto power.

Republicans are losing control of Congress

A major blow to Republicans in the midterm elections will see the Democrats take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in January 2027. Both chambers were Republican-controlled before the election. The Democratic victory in key seats is shifting the balance of political power in Washington.

With control of Congress, Democrats will have greater opportunities to oversee and hold the Trump administration accountable. They will also have the opportunity to launch investigations into various decisions and policies of the administration, as well as use their majority power in Congress to block Trump's legislative plans.

This could create new challenges for the Trump administration in lawmaking and policy implementation. On the other hand, Trump's early warning of impeachment hints at a potential political conflict between the two parties after the change of power in Congress.
