UN Secretary-General praises Pakistan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has praised Pakistan's efforts to peacefully resolve regional conflicts. He made the remarks during a meeting with Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir in Rawalpindi on Wednesday (October 7).
In a statement, Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that during the meeting held at the General Headquarters, Guterres and Asim Munir discussed matters of mutual interest, the regional security situation, and the role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and security.
The statement said that Guterres paid tribute to the sacrifices and contributions of Pakistan and its armed forces in the fight against terrorism and in UN peacekeeping missions. At the same time, he particularly praised Pakistan's efforts to peacefully resolve regional conflicts, recognizing its continued commitment to international peace and security.
The meeting also discussed regional stability, the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, and terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
Asim Munir reiterated Pakistan's commitment to international peace and highlighted Pakistan's contribution to UN peacekeeping missions. He also praised the role of the UN under the leadership of Guterres in advancing peace, stability and humanitarian cooperation.
Guterres arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday, where he praised Pakistan's diplomatic role in resolving regional conflicts in a joint press conference with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Guterres said Pakistan's leadership played a key role in creating an environment for dialogue and mediating the conflict between the United States and Iran. According to him, Pakistan's efforts led to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, the subsequent ceasefire and the framework for future negotiations.
He said that every Pakistani should be proud of this important role. He also highlighted Pakistan's role as a member of the UN Security Council for the last two years.
The UN Secretary-General stressed the importance of multilateralism, dialogue, mediation and diplomacy at a time of growing division and mistrust around the world. He also reiterated the UN's support for Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.
Guterres said that Pakistan has suffered greatly due to terrorism and thousands of lives have been lost. But at the same time, he praised the resilience of the Pakistani people and their determination to build a better future.
Earlier, Guterres discussed Palestine, Jammu and Kashmir, Afghanistan, counter-terrorism efforts and the future of the multilateral system in his meeting with Ishaq Dar. During the meeting, Ishaq Dar highlighted Pakistan's position on Jammu and Kashmir and the Indus Water Treaty. He also spoke about Pakistan's diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and de-escalate tensions between the United States and Iran.
