Trump addresses world leaders at UN General Assembly

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- President Donald Trump is addressed world leaders Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly as representatives from nearly 200 nations gather in New York City for the annual meeting.

Trump arrived at the United Nations on Tuesday, determined to cast himself as a peacemaker while issuing a stark ultimatum to the Iranians.

"Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before? Maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world," Trump said. "Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?"

Trump used his sixth address to world leaders to claim American supremacy in literally every category.

"While others have spoken of peace, I have made peace. While others have ignored threats, I have confronted them. While others have talked of courage, America has shown it. While others have promised strength, I have used it to make America the most powerful country in the world," the president said.

The president was applauded politely-twice during the speech, and both before and after.

As his Trump's speech raised the stakes on Iran, more drama was building outside of the General Assembly.

Last night in a CNN interview, Mayor Zohran Mamdani repeated his claim that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested.

"I have been clear about the way that I see the world and I always owe New Yorkers that honesty," Mamdani said. "And when it comes to Benjamin Netanyahu, I have described him as I believe him to be a war criminal and an architect of a horrific genocide of the Palestinian people."

And the prime minister hit back Tuesday, posting on social media:

"Shame on you, Mr. Mamdani. Shame on you for supporting the Hamas terrorist monsters who butchered our people. Shame on you for inciting riots against New York Jews. I'm coming to the UN. I'm going to tell the truth about our heroic soldiers, and I'm going to tell the truth about you."

The General Assembly comes one day after Trump met with Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion. The meeting marked the pair's third face-to-face encounter.

Protests are expected near U.N. headquarters as world leaders continue their meetings throughout the week.Trump is also scheduled to meet Tuesday afternoon with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as part of a series of events surrounding the General Assembly.

The 81st session of the General Assembly has brought heightened security and traffic disruptions across New York City as delegations move throughout the city.

Thousands of NYPD officers and specialized units are deployed around U.N. headquarters, and road closures are expected throughout the week. Portions of the FDR Drive also may be affected as world leaders travel to and from events.
