The Latin American country of Peru is in turmoil with protests. On Saturday (September 20), local time, anti-government protesters clashed with police in the country's capital, Lima.
Protesters threw stones and sticks at police. On the other hand, police fired tear gas at them. In recent times, social unrest has been increasing in Peru against organized crime, government corruption and a new pension reform. The movement began in that context.
Clashes broke out when protesters tried to advance towards the presidential palace and the congress building in Lima. Several people were injured.
President Dina Boluarte's popularity has plummeted further in the incident. Although her term is set to end next year, strong dissatisfaction has already spread among the public. Opinion polls show that a large part of the public identifies both the government and the majority congress as corrupt institutions.
