Public discontent has flared up again on the streets. Tensions have spread across the country as millions of people took to the streets on Thursday against the government's proposed 43.8 billion euro budget cuts and cuts in public services. Major cities such as the capital Paris and Lyon, Nantes, Marseille and Bordeaux have been shaken by the protests.

The labor union CGT claimed that more than a million people took part in Thursday's protests across the country. However, the Interior Minister estimated the number to be closer to half a million.

Tensions have also spread in several places, along with peaceful marches. A section of protesters clashed with police in Paris. Riot police tried to bring the situation under control by firing tear gas and stun grenades.

181 people have been arrested across the country, 31 of whom are from Paris. At least two were injured in the clashes in the city of Lyon. 11 police officers were also reported to have suffered minor injuries.

The protests have had a major impact on public life. Metro and rail services were partially closed, classes were suspended in schools, and services in hospitals and pharmacies were disrupted. Many shops were forced to close.

New Prime Minister Sebastien Le Cornouaille has said that budget reform is essential for the country's financial balance. However, some proposals, especially the decision to cancel holidays, are being reconsidered in the face of criticism.

The political arena is also bustling with public protests. The government, which has lost its majority in parliament, is now facing a major challenge in passing a budget.

According to analysts, if the crisis drags on, France could face another round of political instability.
