A new chapter has begun in the history of Nepal. After becoming the first female Chief Justice of the country's Supreme Court, Sushila Karki has now created history as the Prime Minister. The 72-year-old woman took oath as Nepal's first female Prime Minister by taking oath before President Ram Chandra Paudel at 9:15 pm on Friday (September 12). The announcement was made officially from the President's residence, Shital Niwas.
Sushila Karki received the first proposal from the protesters to head the interim government when the country became leaderless in the recent political unrest. She had stipulated that she would consider the proposal if she received at least 1,000 written signatures. But first, more than 2,500 signatures were submitted in her favor. In this, the protesters officially nominated her. However, uncertainty arose when a section of the protesters proposed the name of former electrical engineer Kul Man Ghisingh on Thursday.
Earlier, after the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday, a debate began over the new leadership. First, the popular mayor of Kathmandu and young rapper Balendra Shah alias 'Baleen' came up for discussion. But the situation changed dramatically when the name of former Chief Justice Sushila came up on behalf of the student and youth leadership. Even Baleen supported him. Finally, Sushila's name was finalized through voting on Friday.
Immediately after taking oath, Sushila Karki announced the formation of a small-scale interim cabinet. It is known that she will hold the first cabinet meeting on Friday night. A proposal to dissolve the central and provincial parliaments will be raised from that meeting.
For the past few weeks, the young generation, especially Zen-Zira, has been taking to the streets in Nepal to protest the ban on social media. Last Monday, many students were killed in security forces' firing when protesters tried to enter the parliament. This further increased anger.
When the situation reached a peak, KP Sharma Oli resigned as Prime Minister on Tuesday and went into hiding the next day. On that day, protesters attacked the homes of several former prime ministers and the residences of various ministers. There was even an incident of publicly beating the finance minister. In this context, demands were made to elect a new leadership and Sushila Karki was finally given the responsibility.
Sushila Karki was born in 1952. She studied at Banaras Hindu University in India. She started her career as a teacher, later joining the legal profession. In 2009, she became a judge of the Supreme Court of Nepal and in 2016, she became the country's first female Chief Justice.
As a judge, Sushila Karki was known for her strong stance against corruption. Her transparency, fearlessness and fairness made her especially popular with the younger generation. That is why she has become a symbol of trust for the new generation that has emerged from the wave of social media movements.
After serving as the Chief Justice from 2016 to 2017, she retired. This time, she made history again by becoming the country's first female Prime Minister.
Female leadership is a very rare occurrence in Nepal's political history. Sushila Karki has become the Prime Minister after President Bidya Devi Bhandari. It can be said that this woman, a symbol of law, justice and integrity, has brought a message of stability during Nepal's interim political turmoil.
She now faces a difficult challenge - on the one hand, maintaining the trust of the disaffected young generation, and on the other, bringing the country's political parties to the negotiating table. However, given her past career and reputation for honesty, many are optimistic that Nepal may find a new political direction under Sushila Karki's leadership.
