Trump’s sanctions against Iran are ’showmanship’: US senator

Senator Chris Murphy has strongly criticized the new US economic sanctions on Iran, claiming that ordinary Americans are paying a heavy price for the US action against Iran. Middle East Eye

The United States has announced new tough economic pressure on Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said the pressure is being created to target Tehran's global financial interests.

At a press conference held at the Treasury Department on Monday (August 24), the US Treasury Secretary said that the main goal of this operation is to cut off all sources of income for Iran, including the oil sector, and to prevent other countries and companies from doing business with Tehran.

In a post on social media after the US Treasury Secretary's announcement, Murphy said that 'D-Day' was actually a disappointing 'show-off' move. Iran is winning the war, Trump is losing, and Americans are paying a heavy price for it.

In multiple posts, he outlined several reasons for the US's failure in the war against Iran. According to him, the goals the US had set at the beginning of the war were not achieved.

At the same time, he also noted in the post that Iran retains control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and that the US military's stockpiles of various military equipment, including ammunition, have also been reduced. 

Murphy added, "The bottom line is that Trump lost the military campaign. Now, to hide this humiliating defeat, he is presenting a system in the name of economic pressure that makes it seem like the United States is still at war."

He claims that the war is effectively over and that Iran has sadly won, calling the new economic sanctions merely a "show-off".
