The US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, is facing additional financial pressure due to the increase in fuel prices due to the impact of the Iran war. Due to the abnormal increase in fuel costs, it is having to spend a huge amount of extra money on military operations, ABC News reported in a report.
According to the Department of Defense, the military spent an average of $154.14 per barrel of fuel in October, but it increased to $195.72 in April. The average price of fuel has increased by about 27 percent in just six months. This calculation includes about 24 types of fuel, including gasoline and jet fuel.
The report said that due to the increase in fuel prices during the Iran war, the Pentagon may spend more than $1 billion more this year to operate military aircraft, tanks and other military equipment. The US Department of Defense uses about 80 million barrels of fuel annually.
Not only military fuel, but also civilian fuel and commercial airline fares have increased. Military personnel often use commercial flights, rental cars and personal vehicles for training and other activities. As a result, increased spending in these sectors is also putting additional pressure on the budget.
Strict monitoring has begun in the travel sector to control costs. The report noted that since at least April, some military units have significantly reduced or canceled scheduled travel for training and other programs.
US Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Orlando Howard said that transportation costs have increased due to the current energy market situation, which is affecting the cost of transporting personnel, equipment and logistics.
Meanwhile, the report also stated that the US Army is facing a budget deficit of 4 to 6 billion dollars for the remainder of the current fiscal year. The fiscal year ends on September 30.
The report said that several factors are working behind this deficit. These include the US and Israel's military operations against Iran, increased spending on border security missions and the ongoing deployment of the National Guard in Washington, DC.
