France became the first team to book a place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals after securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over Morocco in the tournament's opening quarter-final. Didier Deschamps' men completely dominated the African side, with Achraf Hakimi's Morocco struggling to match the French intensity throughout the contest.
Despite creating a series of early chances, France failed to break the deadlock in the opening stages. In the 25th minute, Morocco's Noussair Mazraoui fouled a French player inside the penalty area. After a brief discussion with his assistant, referee Facundo Tello awarded a penalty to France. Although the decision was reviewed by VAR, the referee stood by his original call.
France captain Kylian Mbappe stepped up to take the spot-kick, aiming low towards the bottom-right corner. However, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou guessed correctly, producing an excellent diving save to deny the French superstar.
France continued to press, and in the 32nd minute, young forward Désiré Doué made a brilliant solo run into the Moroccan penalty area before firing a left-footed effort towards the far post. Once again, Bounou came to Morocco's rescue with another outstanding save, ensuring the first half ended goalless.
France maintained their relentless attacking approach after the restart and finally found the breakthrough in the 60th minute. Mbappe unleashed a powerful long-range strike from outside the box that beat the Moroccan defence and flew into the bottom-right corner, giving France a deserved 1-0 lead.
The defending champions doubled their advantage in the 71st minute. Mbappe delivered a superb pass to Ousmane Dembélé just outside the penalty area. Although Dembélé's shot lacked power, it somehow slipped past both the Moroccan defender and goalkeeper before rolling into the bottom-right corner of the net, sealing a convincing 2-0 victory for France.
The win sends Didier Deschamps' side into the World Cup semi-finals as the first team to secure a place in the last four.
