England midfielder Jordan Henderson has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup after suffering a fractured wrist during post-match celebrations following his team's dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the Round of 16.
After the final whistle, England's players went over to celebrate with their supporters when Henderson fell over an advertising board, sustaining a serious injury. Medical staff immediately rushed to his aid, administered oxygen and later carried him off the pitch on a stretcher before taking him to hospital.
Speaking to the BBC after the match, England midfielder Jude Bellingham said: "He's having a bit of a difficult time, but our medical team has everything under control. I don't know exactly what happened, so I don't want to say too much. Everyone was there for him, and it was a really special moment to see."
England manager Thomas Tuchel also expressed his concern.
"Jordan has injured his wrist. It doesn't fit with such a great night that he isn't here with us," Tuchel said. "I don't know what the next steps will be. The doctor has only told me that he's in hospital."
It was later confirmed that Henderson had suffered a fractured wrist, bringing his World Cup campaign to an early end.
The former Liverpool captain had played only a limited role in the tournament, making his lone appearance as an 84th-minute substitute against Panama. He remained on the bench against Mexico but was booked during the match after becoming involved in a heated exchange near the touchline.
England booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to Jude Bellingham's brace and Harry Kane's penalty in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Despite being reduced to 10 men after Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half for a dangerous challenge on Jesus Gallardo, the Three Lions held on to secure a memorable win.
