Cape Verde Coach Proud Despite Heartbreaking World Cup Exit

Few had even heard of Cape Verde before this World Cup. The tiny island nation had already stunned the football world by qualifying for the tournament for the first time, then defied expectations again by reaching the knockout stage from a group featuring two former world champions. They came within touching distance of an even greater upset, pushing reigning champions Argentina to the limit before bowing out in a thrilling contest.
Despite the painful elimination, Cape Verde head coach Bubista said he was immensely proud of his players.
Ranked 67th in the world, the African side emerged as one of the tournament's biggest surprises in their first appearance on football's grandest stage. After drawing with former champions Spain and Uruguay in the group stage, they also held reigning world champions and world No. 1 Argentina level over 90 minutes before eventually losing 3-2 after extra time.
Former centre-back Bubista has been the architect of Cape Verde's remarkable rise. None of his players compete in Europe's elite leagues, making the team's achievements even more impressive.
Speaking after the match, Bubista admitted the dressing room was filled with disappointment.
"The feeling in the dressing room is one of sadness. We are sad, of course, because we are out of the competition and because we came so, so close to winning."
He added that the emotional reaction from his players reflected the spirit within the squad.
"They were hugging each other, they were crying. That's part of growing. It helps us develop, and it shows that this team has a real soul."
Bubista said lasting the full 120 minutes against one of the world's strongest teams was a source of enormous pride.
"I am proud of my players and everything they have done. They played with dignity and courage."
The Cape Verde coach also praised Argentina while highlighting his team's performance.
"Argentina showed why they are the world champions. But I also think my team showed how eager they were to play this match."
"I don't think many teams could score twice against Argentina and take the game into extra time. That says a lot about our character and the quality of this team."
"We played with courage and never lost our identity."
Throughout the tournament, Bubista repeatedly stressed that Cape Verde's first World Cup appearance was about far more than football—it was an opportunity to introduce the island nation to the world.
"It was about something bigger than the game. It was about showing the world who we are."
"Throughout this tournament we wanted to compete against the best teams in the world. We played honestly and stood toe-to-toe with our opponents."
He concluded by thanking his players for representing their country with pride.
"I think everyone should thank these players because they have shown the world what our small country is really like."
