Cape Verde came agonisingly close to making history, but their dream ended in heartbreaking fashion as defending champions Argentina secured a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Argentina dominated possession and dictated the early exchanges, but Cape Verde's disciplined defence frustrated the Albiceleste for much of the opening stages. Lionel Messi squandered a chance from Thiago Almada's pass in the 15th minute before failing to beat goalkeeper Vozinha from a free-kick three minutes later.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 29th minute through a moment of brilliance from Messi. Controlling a precise long pass from Lisandro Martínez with his first touch, the Argentine captain skipped past two defenders before calmly finishing inside the near post.
It was Messi's seventh goal of the tournament and his 20th overall in World Cup history. The strike also took his direct goal contributions in World Cup knockout matches to 12 (six goals and six assists), the highest by any player since 1966. He also extended his remarkable scoring streak to eight consecutive World Cup matches.
Argentina continued to push forward, but 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha produced an outstanding save to deny Enzo Fernández from distance, ensuring the South Americans carried only a 1-0 lead into half-time.
Cape Verde emerged a different side after the break, showing greater attacking intent. Emiliano Martínez made an excellent save in the 54th minute, but five minutes later he was beaten as Deroy Duarte fired home from Ryan Mendes' cutback to level the score at 1-1.
Argentina responded with relentless pressure. Vozinha denied Messi from close range after a pass from Lautaro Martínez in the 62nd minute and later produced another superb save to keep out the Argentine captain's curling free-kick in the 72nd. Further opportunities for Messi, Leandro Paredes and Alexis Mac Allister also went begging, sending the match into extra time.
Argentina regained the lead early in extra time. In the 92nd minute, Lisandro Martínez controlled Alexis Mac Allister's flick from a corner before smashing a powerful left-footed strike into the roof of the net to make it 2-1.
Cape Verde refused to surrender. In the 103rd minute, Sidney Lopes Cabral cut inside from the left and curled a magnificent effort beyond Emiliano Martínez to restore parity once again. The spectacular strike was among the finest goals of the tournament.
With the contest seemingly heading for a penalty shootout, Argentina found the decisive breakthrough in the 111th minute. Messi's corner was met by Cristian Romero's header, which deflected off Cape Verde defender Dine Borges and into the net for an unfortunate own goal that restored Argentina's lead.
Cape Verde had one final chance to force penalties, but Emiliano Martínez produced a brilliant save to deny Cabral's free-kick in the 116th minute, preserving Argentina's 3-2 victory.
Vozinha was one of Cape Verde's standout performers, making eight crucial saves to keep his team in the contest throughout the match. Messi registered five shots on target, but in the end, Argentina's passage to the Round of 16 was secured by an own goal.
Although their World Cup journey has come to an end, Cape Verde left a lasting impression, proving they are no longer just a fairy-tale story but a team capable of challenging the world's very best.
