Nepali language drama directed by Mamunur Rashid

A new chapter has been added to the career of legendary actor Mamunur Rashid, the charioteer of the country's stage drama for six decades. This time, the veteran actor directed a Nepali language play. From acting, writing plays and directing to being a theater organizer, he has created a unique example in his six-decade journey. He set a precedent by directing plays on the Nepali stage. 

Mamunur Rashid directed the play 'Ayo Gorkhali' at the Sarvanam Theater in Kathmandu, Nepal on Monday (September 28). This marked his debut as a director in Nepali drama.

The play 'Ayo Gorkhali' is written by Mock Chew Yu. Mamunur Rashid has known this writer for almost four decades. The second performance of the play will be held today, Tuesday (September 29) at the same venue (Sarbanam Theatre Auditorium). Artists from Nepal, Ireland and Hong Kong are performing in it.

Playwright Mock Chew Yew had been planning to write a play about the life and struggle of the Gorkhas for a decade and a half. He had discussed the matter with playwright Mamunur Rashid several times. The play was completed this year. Then they invited Mamunur Rashid to direct.

Mamunur Rashid is not proficient in Nepali. As a result, the work was as challenging as it was enjoyable for him. He was able to learn new things. The legendary actor also said that he received a great response from the audience in the first screening.  

The main theme of the play is how the Gorkha warriors, despite their outstanding bravery and loyalty in the First and Second World Wars, were deprived of their just rights and faced discrimination compared to the British soldiers. That reality is brought out in this story - the heroism, sacrifice and life struggle of the world-famous Gorkha soldiers of Nepal.
