DiCaprio and Bezos couple’s $200 million sacrifice to save endangered species

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio and one of the world's richest entrepreneurs Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez Bezos have joined hands to protect the world's biodiversity. They have formed a $200 million fund to save animals and plants on the verge of extinction, which is considered the largest single charitable funding in the history of such an initiative.

DiCaprio's organization Re and Bezos Earth Fund have jointly launched the 'Phoenix Species Project'. Under this project, initiatives will be taken to bring 100 endangered species from extinction in 30 countries around the world. The list includes mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, invertebrates and various plants. Conservation activities will be carried out in various habitats, from the ocean to volcanic plains.

The Bezos Earth Fund will provide $100 million for this initiative. The remaining $100 million will be funded by Ree, which is backed by Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, Age of Union and the Todd Graves Family Foundation.

One of the features of the project is that it is not just a short-term grant; rather, it will implement sustainable recovery plans for each species through long-term investments. More than 100 local and international partner organizations around the world will conduct conservation activities according to the needs of the region and species concerned. In addition, the active participation of indigenous peoples, local communities, scientists and conservationists will be ensured.

The IUCN Species Survival Commission, the world's largest voluntary conservation science network, will serve as the global knowledge partner for the project. In addition, the Beserve the Red Action Partnership will help various countries identify priority species and implement effective recovery plans.

Numerous animals and plants around the world are rapidly facing extinction due to climate change, deforestation, pollution and uncontrolled hunting. In such a reality, this joint initiative of DiCaprio and Bezos is being seen as a new light of hope, not only in terms of financing, but also in the global biodiversity conservation movement.
