The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle, the US ambassador to Greece, to resign after a series of allegations of misconduct surfaced against her, the White House confirmed on Tuesday (October 13).
"The White House has asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," said new White House Press Secretary Katie Zakaria at her first news briefing on Tuesday. She added that Guilfoyle was a valuable asset to the administration and that she wished him well for the future.
Later on Tuesday, the White House received Guilfoyle's formal resignation, an official said. US President Donald Trump said the reason for removing Guilfoyle was that he did not like the reports published about her. However, he said he had not spoken to Guilfoyle personally.
In a lengthy post on social media, Guilfoyle acknowledged that his time in office may be coming to an end. But he denied the allegations against him and said he would fight vigorously to protect his name, reputation and integrity.
Guilfoyle is accused of soliciting money in exchange for access to Trump administration officials before his appointment as ambassador was finalized, accepting expensive gifts as ambassador, and taking a lobbyist for a Greek construction company to government meetings.
However, Guilfoyle's lawyers have denied the allegations of solicitation of money. They also claim that the reports published about his travels are misleading. In addition, the lawyers have said that Guilfoyle complies with the federal government's rules on accepting gifts and disclosing information.
Former Trump supporter and donor Eric Deters alleges that just days before Guilfoyle was confirmed for Senate, he texted her asking for money to pay a $100,000 American Express bill. Deters claims that Guilfoyle promised to be his trusted ally in the Trump administration in exchange. But she never paid.
Deters told CNN that the payment was clearly a favor in this case. However, Guilfoyle's lawyers have called the allegations false. They claim that Deters was owed money for speaking engagements and consulting work by Guilfoyle. He was trying to collect that money.
In a post on X, Guilfoyle also called the allegations false. He said he would not allow decades of public service to be defined by false accusations.
Guilfoyle was engaged to Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., for four years. Their relationship ended after that. She then became the U.S. ambassador to Greece in September 2025. Trump said on Tuesday that Guilfoyle was not a member of his family; she had been in a relationship with his son for a long time.
