The US Coast Guard has recovered the wreckage of an air ambulance that went missing in the Atlantic Ocean en route from Bermuda to Boston, USA.
Contact with the plane was lost early Saturday morning near Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. Although debris has been found, the patient, his relatives, and six passengers, including the four pilots, are still missing.
Sources said the Gulfstream G100 medical aircraft was carrying a patient from Bermuda and his family. The aircraft had a crew of four, all Canadian citizens.
According to flight information, the plane reported an electrical fault around 1 a.m. Saturday. The situation deteriorated rapidly. Flight tracking data shows that the plane descended several thousand feet in just three minutes and at one point lost contact with radar.
Air traffic controllers tried to contact the pilot just before the plane disappeared. They wanted to know if an emergency was being declared on the plane. However, no clear answer was received from the pilot on this matter.
The US Coast Guard said it had searched about 1,644 square miles in the first 27 hours since the disappearance. The search for the six missing passengers continues despite the recovery of the wreckage.
Expressing concern over the incident, Bermuda Prime Minister David Burt expressed his condolences to the families of the missing and hoped for the safe return of the six passengers.
