Andy Burnham takes over as UK Prime Minister

The political landscape in the UK has changed again. The party's new leader, Andy Burnham, has replaced Keir Starmer, who led the Labour Party to a landslide victory just two years ago. He formed a new government at Buckingham Palace on Monday (July 20) at the formal invitation of King Charles III.

Burnham takes over as Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade. Under the UK's parliamentary system, voters vote for a party rather than directly electing a prime minister, making this change of leadership possible without a national election.

In his first speech outside Downing Street after taking office, Burnham admitted that the country's image has been tarnished by the frequent changes of prime ministers. His main goal now is to prove Britain's political stability on the world stage and restructure the country's politics.

The former mayor of Greater Manchester and veteran cabinet minister, known as the “King of the North,” has long campaigned for regional power and investment outside London. He has promised to decentralize power to make living costs affordable for ordinary people.

However, Burnham will face several major challenges after taking office. One of his tests on the international stage will be maintaining relations with US President Donald Trump, who has already called him an “ultra-liberal.”

On the other hand, he will also find it difficult to maintain the popularity of the Labour Party in the face of the rise of the hard-right “Reform UK” and the left-wing “Green Party.” Burnham’s first task now is to convince British voters, tired of hearing promises of a “fresh start” from four prime ministers in the past five years, that he will not only improve the quality of life of the people, but also last longer at 10 Downing Street than his predecessors.
