Political tension is at its peak over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list before the 2026 assembly elections in West Bengal. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised a slogan from the Trinamool workers' meeting at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on Monday (December 22). Warning the BJP, Mamata said, "We will take Delhi by winning Bengal. They (BJP) want to take away the voting rights of the people, total autocracy is going on. 46 people have already lost their lives. More than half of them are Hindus."
Mamata alleged that although the SIR is a long process, it is being done in a short time. Terming the entire SIR process a 'blunder', she said, "It is totally unplanned, BJP's commission is in the words of BJP. BJP, you can't do anything by playing with us. You have made all the agencies brokers. BJP's demand is that another 1.5 to 2 crore names should be removed.'
Challenging the BJP, Mamata said, 'You fight in Bengal, if you fight in Bengal, we will take away Delhi from it. You can even cut my throat if you want, but I will speak for the people.'
Meanwhile, Mamata boldly declared that even if the voter list is revised through SIR, it will not have any impact on the ballot box. She alleged that the Election Commission is changing the instructions every day. So far, the instructions have been changed at least 22 to 24 times. As a result, legitimate voters are facing harassment.
The Chief Minister today directed party workers to go door to door to find out if there are any voters who have been left out of the list. She said that if such voters are found, arrangements should be made so that they can complain through the right channel.
58 lakh voters in West Bengal have been left out in the draft list of SIR. Mamata today instructed party workers, MLAs and councilors to cooperate with those who have been found to have irregularities and have received hearing notices.
