"We are opposing authoritarian rule. The federal police and the National Guard have no place on our streets," said Alex Laufer, a protester.
Trump deployed the military to the city last month, promising to crack down on crime. He claimed the move was to "re-establish law and order and public safety."
However, the Justice Department says that violent crime in Washington, D.C., fell to its lowest level in 30 years in 2024. More than 2,000 troops from six Republican states are currently patrolling the city. It is unclear when the troops' duties will end, but the mandate of the D.C. National Guard has been extended until November 30.
Earlier, the US President declared a state of emergency in Washington, DC due to "increased crime." Washington, DC sued the Trump administration on September 4 over the deployment of National Guard troops.
- Washington DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb called the move “unprecedented, unnecessary and illegal.” He said, “There is no ‘state of emergency’ in Washington DC. In fact, violent crime rates in DC have fallen dramatically in recent years. They fell 35 percent from 2023 to 2024 and are down another 26 percent this year.”
