Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has filed a lawsuit against U.S. President Donald Trump, challenging his decision to remove her from the Fed’s Board of Governors.

Trump announced Cook’s dismissal on Monday, citing allegations of mortgage fraud. Cook, appointed by President Joe Biden in 2022 and confirmed to a 14-year term the following year, has denied the accusations and vowed to resist pressure to resign.

“I have no intention of being bullied to step down,” she said in a statement.

Cook’s lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in Washington, argues that the president does not have the authority to dismiss a sitting Fed governor. The complaint asks a judge to declare Trump’s move unlawful.

A hearing on her request for a temporary restraining order is scheduled for Friday before U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb, a Biden appointee.

The White House defended Trump’s decision. Spokesman Kush Desai said the president determined “there was cause to remove a governor accused of lying in financial documents,” adding that the move would strengthen the Fed’s “accountability and credibility.”
