Five people, including a Bangladeshi, were killed in a shooting by a gunman in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Among the deceased are a police officer and the suspected gunman himself. The only police officer killed was a Bangladeshi immigrant, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. local time on Monday (July 28) at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. Commissioner Tisch said the incident is still "under investigation."
In a late-night press briefing, she told reporters, “So far, what we know is that surveillance video shows a man emerging from a double-parked black BMW between 51st and 52nd Streets on Park Avenue. He is holding an M4 rifle in his right hand.”
She continued, “The footage shows the gunman entering the lobby, walking around to the right, and immediately opening fire on a New York police officer.”
She added, “Before heading to the 33rd floor, the man fatally shot two people on the ground floor — one of them a woman, the other a security officer. He then killed another man. One injured individual is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.”
Tisch identified the gunman as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old whose address is listed in Las Vegas. “His motive is still under investigation,” she added.
About the deceased Bangladeshi police officer, she said, “The fallen officer had been serving in the NYPD for over three years and was an immigrant from Bangladesh.” Mayor Eric Adams referred to him as “Officer Islam.”
Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the officer's full name was Didarul Islam. He was married with two children, and his wife is expecting their third child.
An eyewitness, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the incident took place in an office building. “I was nearby when it happened. He [the gunman] was going from floor to floor,” she said.
Other witnesses told AFP the shooting occurred at an office of Blackstone Investment Company.
