Trump Announces 25% Tariff on Indian Goods

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on goods imported from India. He stated that the new tariff policy will come into effect from August 1.
Announcing this on Wednesday, Trump said that starting August 1, India will face an “unspecified” penalty. However, he did not elaborate on the nature or specific reasons behind the penalty.
Trump made the announcement in a post on his own social media platform, Truth Social.
In his post, he further wrote, “While India is our friend, we have done relatively less business with them over the past years. That’s because their tariffs are extremely high—some of the highest in the world. They use the most stringent and frustrating non-tariff barriers compared to any other country.”
Trump continued, “India also consistently purchases a significant portion of its military equipment from Russia. At a time when the world wants Russia to stop killing in Ukraine, India—like China—remains one of the largest buyers of Russian energy. These are not good signs!”
When asked for a response, India’s Ministry of Commerce, which leads trade negotiations with the United States, did not immediately comment on the matter.
