Brazil has formally lodged a complaint with FIFA over the controversial decision to disallow Vinicius Junior's goal against Scotland, according to Argentine outlet TyC Sports. The report says the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) cited Lionel Messi's goal against Austria as an example of inconsistent use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Brazil cruised to a 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match of the FIFA World Cup in Miami on Thursday. Vinicius was in outstanding form, scoring twice in the first half. However, another goal he scored in the 24th minute was ruled out following a VAR review.
The incident occurred after Vinicius won possession from Scottish defender Jack Hendry before finding the net. After reviewing the play, Mexican referee Cesar Ramos ruled that the Real Madrid forward had committed a foul while dispossessing Hendry, leading to the goal being disallowed.
According to TyC Sports, the CBF argued that a similar challenge occurred during Argentina's 2-0 win over Austria in Dallas earlier this week. They claimed Alexis Mac Allister's challenge on Austrian midfielder Xaver Schlager before Messi's opening goal was comparable to Vinicius' incident. However, no foul was awarded on that occasion, and Messi's goal was allowed to stand.
The CBF said the decision to disallow Vinicius' goal was inconsistent with the refereeing standard applied in other matches during the tournament.
"The decision to disallow Brazil's goal against Scotland does not appear to be consistent with the philosophy applied throughout this competition," the federation said in a statement quoted by TyC Sports.
The statement added that the decision came as a surprise not only to Brazil's players but also to Scotland's, whose immediate reactions suggested they did not expect a VAR review or the goal to be overturned.
Despite the controversy, the decision had no impact on the result. Brazil finished top of Group C with seven points from three matches under coach Carlo Ancelotti and will face Japan in the Round of 32 in Houston on Monday.
