After the documentary 'Melania', which was severely criticized by critics but received a wide response from the audience, Amazon is now bringing a new docuseries about the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump. Melania's senior advisor Mark Beckman said that the series will be released this fall and will highlight a completely new aspect of her life.
According to Beckman, the new series will not be a repeat of the previous documentary. Rather, it will present Melania's duties as First Lady in the White House, her family life, professional path and public welfare activities in a more comprehensive manner. He claims that while the full-length documentary only highlighted the events of 20 days, the new docuseries will give viewers a deeper understanding of Melania's life and work.
The announcement of the Toon series comes months after the release of Brett Ratner's documentary "Melania," which has caused a rare contrast in the evaluation of critics and audiences. On review platform Rotten Tomatoes, the film had a critic score of just 10 percent, while verified viewers gave it a 99 percent positive rating. The company claims that such a wide gap between the opinions of critics and audiences has never been seen before in their history.
The documentary also had a strong start at the box office. It earned $7.4 million worldwide in its first weekend of release, making it the highest-grossing non-fiction documentary of the last decade. However, this income is far less than the huge investment of Amazon MGM Studios. Various reports have said that the company spent about $40 million to buy the rights to the documentary and another $35 million on marketing.
Meanwhile, the project was also a talked-about comeback for director Brett Ratner. During the #MeToo movement, multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, but he denied it and no criminal charges were filed against him.
However, despite the criticism, controversy and commercial calculations, Amazon's new venture around Melania Trump is expected to generate renewed international interest.
