Leena resigns from the Women’s Commission after Mamata’s change of heart

Writer, producer, director and Chairperson of the West Bengal Women's Commission Leena Gangopadhyay resigned from the commission a few months before the end of her 9-year term. Was the writer waiting for a change in the state?

The Chairperson of the Women's Commission said this in an interview with a media outlet on Tuesday (May 12) night.

Confirming the matter, Leena Gangopadhyay said, "I resigned two days ago." However, she has not yet received any official message regarding whether her resignation has been accepted.

For now, speculation is rife in Talipara and political circles - is Leena's departure a sign of a new beginning? Or is it just the end of a chapter in the chain of command?

The Women and Child Welfare Department is in the hands of the state's Deputy Chief Minister Agnimitra Pal. Leena resigned practically out of compulsion, say informed sources. According to the rules, this honorary post can be held for a maximum of 9 years, which was supposed to be completed in July. Before that, she announced her decision to step down on her own.
