Belmont Park Racetrack reopens after $450 million transformation with new grandstand, racetracks

ELMONT, Long Island (WABC) -- Belmont Park Racetrack is reopening Friday following a $450 million investment that transformed the historic property into a modern sports and entertainment destination.

Crews were putting the finishing touches on the property ahead of opening day, power washing the entrance, watering the track and completing other final preparations.

The new grandstand stands five stories tall and features modern bars and restaurants. The property also includes four new racetracks.

The building itself has been significantly reduced in size, going from about 1.5 million square feet to 300,000 square feet.

The New York Racing Association says the smaller footprint has allowed it to create more green space and provide access to the infield.

Only the first two floors of the new building will be open as of Friday. The remainder of the building is expected to be completed in spring 2027.

Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at around 10 a.m.

The first race is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday.
