Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been granted bail in eight cases related to attacks on military installations in May 2023. The country’s Supreme Court approved his bail on Thursday (August 21).
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Yahya Afridi, accepted Khan’s appeal against a Lahore High Court ruling that had earlier rejected his bail petitions in the eight cases tied to the 2023 violence.
The court directed that 72-year-old Imran Khan be released unless charged in any other case. However, he will remain in prison as he has already been convicted in a corruption case.
The former cricket star-turned-politician faces multiple charges, ranging from corruption to terrorism. Several of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leaders, including opposition leaders from both houses of parliament, have also recently been convicted in similar cases.
In May 2023, following Khan’s arrest in a corruption case, protesters vandalized several military installations, including the army’s General Headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
