Haley Gave Warning to Trump About India

Tensions between the United States and India have peaked over Washington’s decision to impose additional tariffs on India for purchasing oil from Russia. At a time when relations between the two countries are on the brink of collapse, former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley has issued a warning to President Donald Trump. She said, “India should not be treated as a rival like China.”
In an op-ed published in Newsweek on Wednesday (August 20), Haley further wrote, “Issues such as Trump administration tariffs or America’s role in the India-Pakistan ceasefire should not create divisions between the world’s two largest democracies.”
In recent weeks, tensions in U.S.-India relations have sharply escalated. The Trump administration has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on India for importing Russian oil. Earlier, an equivalent tariff had also been imposed on Indian goods.
India, however, has made it clear that talks regarding tariffs are still ongoing.
Meanwhile, New Delhi has dismissed Trump’s repeated claims that he helped prevent a “nuclear war” between India and Pakistan. Instead, it has stated firmly that no third party intervened to stop the conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself conveyed this message in his Independence Day speech.
Against this backdrop, Haley wrote: “India should be valued as a free and democratic partner, not treated as a rival like China.”
She added: “For the Trump administration to achieve its foreign policy goals — defeating China and achieving peace through strength — few things are more important than putting U.S.-India relations back on track.”
Trump’s fellow Republican further stressed: “It would be a strategic disaster to derail 25 years of momentum in relations with the only country capable of countering Chinese dominance in Asia.”
