A. League leader’s letter to the Prime Minister, what’s in it

A letter written by the General Secretary of the Upazila Awami League and former Upazila Chairman Md. Mirajul Islam in Bhandaria, Pirojpur has gone viral on social media. The leader of the banned organization congratulated Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the letter.

In the viral letter, Mirajul Islam congratulated the Prime Minister for forming the government by securing a two-thirds majority in the national elections held on February 12. In the letter, he praised the 31-point plan to repair the state structure and the slogan 'Bangladesh first' and expressed confidence in the Prime Minister's strong leadership. In addition, he also mentioned that the Prime Minister's leadership has instilled hope among the people of the country after taking oath on February 17.

It is learned that the letter was sent to the Prime Minister's Office on April 20. However, it was not written on a political pad but on the official pad of a contracting company called 'Ifti ETCL Private Limited'. Md. Mirajul Islam is serving as the Managing Director of that contracting company.

Basically, the letter demanded an extension of the implementation period of their ongoing contracting projects in Pirojpur district under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). At a time when the activities of the Awami League as a political organization are currently banned, such a letter from the General Secretary of Bhandaria Upazila Awami League has created quite a stir locally.

What was written in the letter from Mirajul's contracting pad is that on February 12, we congratulate you wholeheartedly on the formation of a democratic government under your leadership after winning the direct vote of the people with more than two-thirds of the public support.

This outstanding victory of the party is due to the 31-point plan to repair the state structure, the timely election manifesto and above all, the slogan of Bangladesh first and foremost, expressing the innermost thoughts of the people of the country. The people of Bengal have given you and your party love with open arms. It is your turn to give to the people as the head of the forces supporting the great liberation war. After taking oath as the Prime Minister on February 17, your state-appointed leadership has already instilled boundless hope in the people of the country. I hope the people of Bengal will not be disappointed with your strong-led government.

Attempts to contact Bhandaria Upazila Awami League General Secretary Md. Mirajul Islam on this issue were unsuccessful. However, it was learned that he has been abroad since August 5.
