European Union welcomes interim government’s decision on elections and referendum

The European Union (EU) welcomed the announcement of elections and referendum in February in a speech given by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus to the nation. This information was given on the official page of EU Bangladesh on social media Facebook on Thursday (November 13) night.

The message said, ‘The EU supports democratic elections under the interim government of Bangladesh. We welcome the leadership of Chief Adviser Yunus to organize participatory, free and fair elections in February next year.’

The European Union also advised on political unity in all areas. In this regard, the Facebook message said, ‘We encourage political parties to engage constructively in the next steps.’

In his address to the nation at 2:30 pm today, Thursday, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus highlighted various issues including the implementation of the July National Charter (constitutional reform). In the announcement, he said that the referendum will be organized on the day of the next national parliament election.

The referendum will be on one question on four issues. If passed in the referendum, the next National Parliament will be bicameral. An upper house with 100 members will be formed in proportion to the votes received by the parties in the National Parliament elections. In addition, to amend the constitution, the approval of the majority of the members of the upper house will be required.
