Music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, 55, was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges but was convicted on two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution after a seven-week trial in New York.
The jury, consisting of eight men and four women, deliberated for 13 hours over three days before reaching the verdict. Each prostitution charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Combs appeared relieved when the verdict was announced, thanking his lawyers and the jury. Judge Arun Subramanian praised the jurors for their dedication throughout the trial.
The Charges and Trial
Prosecutors alleged that Combs led a criminal enterprise over decades, involving drug distribution, forced labor, bribery, witness tampering, and even arson. However, the jury could not reach a consensus on the racketeering charges and was instructed to continue deliberating until they delivered the partial verdict.
Two women — singer Cassie Ventura and another known only as "Jane" — accused Combs of sex trafficking and abuse during long-term relationships. Both testified to being coerced into sexual acts with hired men. The defense argued all sexual encounters were consensual, despite acknowledging incidents of domestic violence.
One key piece of evidence included widely circulated surveillance footage showing Combs assaulting Ventura.
Prosecution vs. Defense
Prosecutor Maurene Comey accused Combs of long-standing abuse and manipulation, saying:
“In his mind, he was untouchable… He never thought the women he abused would speak out.”
Combs has denied all allegations and now faces sentencing for the prostitution convictions.
