In a move that signals a renewed escalation in trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on 14 trade partner countries—including Bangladesh.
On Monday, July 7 (local time), Trump signed off on a letter announcing additional tariffs, with the highest—40%—being levied on Myanmar and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The new tariffs are set to take effect from August 1, 2025.
Trump stated that he remains open to negotiations and suggested he is willing to show flexibility to reach agreements.
He added, “We made a deal with the UK, we made a deal with China, we’re close to a deal with India… With the countries we met and felt we couldn’t reach a deal, we’re simply sending them a letter.”
Countries and Tariff Rates Announced by Trump:
Laos – 40% tariff
Myanmar – 40% tariff
Thailand – 36% tariff
Cambodia – 36% tariff
Bangladesh – 35% tariff
Serbia – 35% tariff
Indonesia – 32% tariff
South Africa – 30% tariff
Bosnia and Herzegovina – 30% tariff
Malaysia – 25% tariff
Tunisia – 25% tariff

These actions mark a significant shift in U.S. trade relations, especially for developing nations like Bangladesh, which now faces steep export barriers in the American market.
