Spotify Introduces In-App Messaging to Strengthen Social Features

Spotify has rolled out a new in-app messaging feature designed to boost social interaction on the platform.
According to TechCrunch, the feature currently supports only one-to-one conversations. Users can message contacts they’ve previously interacted with through collaborative playlists, Blend or Jam sessions, or within the same Family or Duo plan—after mutual approval.
Previously, Spotify allowed music sharing only via external platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok. Now, recipients of shared Spotify links on those platforms can approve a chat request within the app. Users can also invite contacts directly via a message link.
Messages are accessible through the user’s profile picture under the new Messages section. Features include emoji reactions, the ability to report inappropriate content, and monitoring for policy compliance. While Spotify encrypts messages in storage and during transmission, they are not end-to-end encrypted.
The messaging function is initially rolling out to users over 16 in select Latin American and South American markets on mobile devices. Spotify plans to expand availability in the coming weeks to the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the EU, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.
This launch follows Spotify’s recent push toward greater interactivity, including podcast comments and a redesigned, video-focused homepage. Gustav Söderström, Spotify’s Chief Product & Technology Officer, said the app’s mobile experience is set to become “much more interactive,” with messaging marking a step in that direction.
However, some users worry that the addition could further clutter the app’s interface, which has already faced criticism for being overly busy.
