To keep the onion market bearable, the government is allowing limited imports of essential commodities from Sunday (December 7). This information was given in a notification by the Ministry of Agriculture on Saturday (December 6).
It said that to keep the onion market bearable, limited onion imports will be allowed from Sunday. 50 IPs (import permits) will be issued every day. Each IP will be approved for a maximum of 30 tons of onion.
The notification said that only importers who have applied for export permits from August 1 to date can resubmit their applications. In this case, an importer will get the opportunity to apply only once.
The Ministry of Agriculture also said that this activity will continue until further orders are issued to keep the onion market bearable in the country.
It is worth noting that the onion market has suddenly increased. The price of onion per kg in the capital's market has already exceeded 150 taka. Overall, the price of onion per kg has increased by 20 to 30 taka in the space of a week.
In this situation, last week, Agriculture Advisor Retired Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that there is sufficient stock of onions in the country. Therefore, the government is not allowing the import of onions in the interest of farmers. Although the stockholders are taking advantage of such a move by the government. In this situation, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced that it will allow the import of onions on a limited scale from Sunday to keep the market price tolerable.
